I will be listing books that I have enjoyed here. This is another of my ongoing projects because there are so many and I cannot remember them all at one time! I enjoy reading and my interests in books has varied over the years. At times I would enjoy reading novels, at others I would read books that taught me things, like do-it-yourself books, and at other times information books like travel books or self help books. I moved house over the last year and now have a house with a LIBRARY in it! ..a glorified word for a room with bookshelves in it as well as a table, put-u-up and nick-knacks! However it is a room where most of the books in the house reside.. hence my library!
William HorwoodThe Boy With No Shoes
ISBN: 0-7553-1318-6
An excellent memoir of his early childhood, showing the agonising ordeals he sufferd on his journey to adulthood. A book filled with every kind of emotion. I found it difficult to put down and very very thought provoking.
Dawn French Dear Fatty
ISBN: 978-0-09-951947-8
I really enjoyed this book, but I have a feeling that was because I knew a lot of the characters in it. I only remember meeting Dawn once when she was about thirteen years old, at the family farm in Cornwall, but I have followed her career a lot since then and enjoyed her sense of humour. This was an interesting look into her story.
Shirley MacLaine Out On A Limb
ISBN: N 0-553-25045-077450
The actress Shirley MacLaine describes how she went within herself to discover who she is. Interesting to read about the people she knows and the co-incidences in her life that lead her along in a certain direction. I really enjoyed this book.
Nick Barratt Who Do You Think You are? Encyclopedia of Genealogy
ISBN: 978-0-00-783053-4
A birthday present that was very well received since Genealogy is a hobby of mine! An excellent book, giving the basics on how to research your family tree, what to look for in birth, marriage and death certificates, parish records and census returns. Lots of useful information. A must have for any genealogist!
The Reader's Digest Good Health Cookbooks Vegetables and Desserts
ISBN: 0-89577-226-4
A great recipe book, with recipes and photos. Each recipe has a section showing how it can be made healthier by perhaps reducing salt, or cholestrol, or sugar, or fat. it also shows how many calories it can be reduced by when substitutions are made.
"Sarita R Rainey" Weaving Without A Loom
ISBN: 0-13-947796-9
An interesting book with lots of ideas and great illustrations showing the ideas that are being talked about. I borrowed this book from a friend, but it woudl be a great book to come back to time and time again.
"Michael J. Fox" Lucky man, a Memoir
ISBN: 0-091-88567-1
An interesting story. I knew nothing of Michael J Fox, except a few films of his, including "Back to the Future" which I thoroughly enjoyed, by the way, and the fact he had parkinson's Disease. This book is an insight into the trauma Michael went through on discovering he had Parkinson's and the way he has eventually dealt with it. An interesting insightful read.
Simcha Jacobovici and Charles Pellegrino "The Jesus Family Tomb"
ISBN 978-0-00-724567-3
In 1980 a crypt was discovered in Jerusalem. There were ten ossuaries in them and the inscriptions on them were names from the New Testament. Jesus son of Joseph, Mary and others. This is the story of the discovery of the tomb in 1980 and the documentation of the investigation in 2005 including DNA evidence.
The evidence to my way of thinking showed that the tomb of Jesus had been found, including his brother, his wife and his son even though we are led to believe from reading the bible that he was not married. This evidence seems to prove to me that he certainly could have been! Worth reading especially if you have an open mind and an interest in discovering more.
Elaine Pagels and Karen L King "Reading Judas, the gospel of Judas and the shaping of Christianity."
ISBN 978-0-713-99984-6
The gospel of Judas was discovered in the 1970's. Lots of text and lines 0f text are missing. The first part of the book discusses the meaning of the gospel of Judas while the latter part is the gospel of Judas, translated from the original coptic.
I read this book after reading The Jesus Family Tomb (see review above) and was disapointed. I am not quite sure what I was expecting but it seemed to tell me little new and lacked the interest of the previous book.
Pierre Berton "Klondike"
ISBN 0-7710-1284-5
Our tennant loaned me this book. It is really really interesting and full of amazing detail about the years of the gold rush to the Klondike...The last Great Gold Rush 1896 - 1899. The feats that many people went to just to reach the Gold Fields are amazing in themselves, and the life they lived while in the Gold Fields equally amazing. I found myself reading excerpts out to my husband. An excellent book! A great author!
H.P. Tywford "It came to our door"
ISBN number not found on the book!
This book is about Plymouth, Devon and the impact that the war years had on the city. The book gives details of everyday life and how the bombing affected a lot of people, making them homeless in an instant. There are some photos of the war years and the devastion that was caused by the bombing. Although this book was full of interesting detail, I lost concentration before the end. It is a book to come back to.
Masaru Emoto "The Hidden Messages in Water"
ISBN 1-416-52219-0
My younger daughter gave me this book for my birthday this year! She knows me well! She knew I would be intriqued by it! The photos of the water crystals are amazing! Different words produce different crystals.... the most beautiful being those produced by "love and gratitude." It really makes you realise the wonder and power of words and how we are affected by them, especially since we are seventy percent water. It shows how we all need to be loved and nourished as opposed to being ridiculed or, worse still, ignored. An eye opener with wonderful photographs.
Michael W. Domis "If I knew then what I know now"
ISBN 0-88088-324-3
This was another gift from my daughter. It is a book of photographs of children in different situations, with witty captions. It is full of humour and insights.
Laurence Gardner "Lost Secrets of the Sacred Ark"
ISBN 0-00-714296-x
This is a book full of information about the Ark of The Covenant. I have been intrigued by the Ark and the stories about it in the Bible since my teens and have often wondered why it was in the sizes and dimensions it is. I found this book so full of information that I have read it a second time to assimilate the knowledge more thoroughly. Laurence gives detailed references to the sources of his information. Platinum Group Metals, (PGM's) were rediscovered in the 19 Century and newly named. In ancient Sumer, PGM's`were classified as anna, fire-stone, and it is a 'highward' condition that converts gold and other noble metals to the white mfkzt powder of the Paradise Stone. This powder was what was called "manna" in the Bible. The ark of the covenant was used in a process that produced the white mfkzt powder from gold. Laurence Gardner tells how the powder in the making goes from heavy to only 44% of its weight, the other 56% going to a different dimension. As I said he offers detailed references to how he has come to the conclusions he did. He follows the Masons though their inception to present day and concludes with the whereabouts of the Ark of the Covenant in this present day. This really is a book that makes you think! So much of it was new to my thought processes that I really did need to read it twice to come to grips with it and it will be a book that needs more reading to fully understand it (in my case anyway). Following the lines of thought with the Masons and all the people involved is not light reading. However it is certainly worth reading especially if you like to have your concepts about reality challenged. This could end up being a kind of reference book. The links to the various chapters in the bible are many and as yet I have not linked to them.
I ended up with two questions running through my mind: If the Ark of the Covenant is where they say it is, and the keystone is not now there, why does the ark still levitate in the other dimension? and: How can we get the ark back into our reality?
Me by Katherine Hepburn
ISBN 0-679-40051-6
A friend loaned me this hard-cover book to read. Katherine writes about her life in little episodes as she rememebers them. Usually it is in chronological order but not always! I like the way she writes. It is in short sentences and often just as if she is in the room with you, chatting away and telling about her life. She talks about how she was not a success in her early days of stage and film work and she tells how she did become a success. She talks about the people who influenced her life. A very enjoyable read from a person whose films I really enjoy!
Home with God - in a life that never ends by Neale Donald Walsch
ISBN 980-0-7432-6715-1
I discovered this book in one of my e-mails that was waiting in my in-box (though I didn't access it for several days) when I came back from the UK on April 22 nd . I had been to the UK to visit family and be there to welcome the arrival of my second grandchild (another boy!!!). I saw that this book was on the shelves on March 29th 2006 (my birthday!) and since I have read and re-read the "Conversations With God Books" many many times when we went out the next day and went past Chapters Book Store in Vancouver I just had to go in and buy it! (It cost me $33 CAD plus tax.) I have today (27th April) finished reading it so it has taken me only six days to read it. I will read it again to be sure. But oh my! Has it ever helped me! It has given me a new insight into death and dying and has taken away any fear that I might have had. The rememberances are utterly amazing and yet deep within myself I realise that it makes sense in a non-sensical way. I understand much more than I ever did that we all have a purpose here on earth and that we each connect with others to achieve this. A remarkable book that will be read my many many people.

These books have been read many many times and each time I come back to them I "remember" something anew.

"Women who love too much" by Robin Norwood.
This book is all about women who think they must be at fault and make amends by loving their partner too much and making excuses for them for the way that they are treated. It deals with women who have alcoholic partners, abusive partners, or partners that belittle as well as other relationships. It also relates to women who come from parents in those types of relationships.
Britain The Landscape Below by Philip Clucas
ISBN 0-86283-1741
This is an all time favourite of mine. It has views of Britain taken from the air. It contains 264 specially commissioned photographs of various parts of Britain - ports, hamlets, towns, cities and is all in colour. A wonderful book that is a pleasure to keep coming back to.
