The Grand Forks I am talking about here is in British Columbia. There is a Grand Forks in North Dakota, USA. which has a larger population and its' own international airport.
Grand Forks British Columbia has a population of about 5,000 rising to 10,000 if you count the outlying areas.
The city of Grand Forks is in the Boundary Area, to the east of the Okanagan. It is east of Osoyo0s, Rock Creek, Midway, and Greenwood. The old city of Phoenix lies between Greenwood and Grand Forks though there is nothing there now that would inform you that once a city of 5,000 people thrived here. Today this area is used for ski-ing in the winter time. To the east of Grand Forks lies Christina lake, the warmest treelined lake in B.C, a popular tourist attraction for people in Alberta as well as B.C.
The city centre is the central hub of the Boundary country with all year round events including Music in the Park, farmers markets in the summer, a fall fair, and ski-ing at Phoenix. International baseball championships are held here annually. Collectors and experts in minerals from all over the world are attracted to the area for the museum quality crystals found at Rock Candy mountain just a short drive away.
The city of Grand Forks has a city hall with an impressive tower clock, an RCMP unit, a baseball arena, swimming pool, ice-rink, skate park, three large food supermarkets, several hardware stores, clothes stores, hotels, motels, and fast food places including a Subway, Dairy Queen, A&W as well as a pizza place. There are chinese foods to eat in or take out, Russian Borscht to be had in several places and for those looking for a property to buy there is the realty office. Besides this there is also a hospital and an airfield, a library, a museum and an art gallery.
The Kettle River runs through Grand Forks and the Grandby forms the eastern boundary. These rivers are great for fishing I am told, and for tubing on in the summer time. In the summer and winter time the river runs low, but in the spring time the river is full and racing.
The climate here is semi-arid. The winters go down to minus ten or fifteen degrees centigrade, while in the summer time the temperatures rise to thirty degrees or more. The average is about 2000 hours of sunshine a year.
