Chives

This is our chives July 21 2006, that I planted as seed at the end of April 2006:

The stems are straight and smooth and bright dark green in color.

Type

Chives are a perennial.

Height

They grow to about 9 inches tall.

Flowers

The flowers from round deep purple pink globes. remove the flower heads regularly to maintain a supply of leaves.

Uses

They are used in culinary dishes and are especailly nice in egg dishes, cheese soufflés, salads, soups, cream cheese sandwiches, and sour cream dressing for baked potatoes. Chive butter is great with grilled chops and steak.

Taste

They taste slightly of onion.

How to use

Snip the chives with scissors. Use the flowers as a garnish.

How to grow

They thrive in any good garden loam but they prefer slighly acidic soil. They like to have some shade.
