Bald-Eagle

Since coming to Canada in 2000 I have been delighted to see birds that we don't get in the UK. Whilst living at Tsawwassen Bald-eagles were seen in abundance. A walk along the dyke there would see them in the trees and flying over the water in search of prey.

Since moving to Grand Forks I have seen fewer bald eagles. However they are still to be seen in the area along by the Kettle River and I am sure beside the Grandby too.

Size:

They are big birds, with a wingspan of over five feet and standing over two feet in height.

Color

They have a black body and a white head, neck and tail. The bill is yellow.

The plummage of the young is speckled and they don't develop the adult coloring until they are about 4 or 5 years old.

Habitat

They live along rivers and lakes where they can feast on fish.

Diet

They eat fish, small mammals, birds and occassionally carrion.

Nests

They make nests in trees and often come back to the same one the next year. The nests called eyries, are large, and they become larger as the bird returns each year and adds new nesting material.

Eggs

Mating

They are monogamous and mate for life.

Lifespan

They live up to about 30 years in the wild.

Where found

They are found along the western coast of Canada and USA and can be found in every one of the United States except hawaii.
