I found that living in Tsawwassen i saw lots of ducks.. in their thousands!!! Each year in the autumn and again in the spring the sea would be awash with ducks as it is in their migrating path. They would travel south in the winter and north in the summer. It truely is a lovely sight to see them all.
Size:
They are over a foot long being about 20 to 23 inches long.
Color
The male of the species is usually brighter colored than the female. The female Mallard, called a hen, is a mottled brown color. The male, called a drake, has bright green plumage on his head and neck, a yellow beak, and purplish brown body.
Habitat
By rivers, lakes and oceans.
Diet
They eat small shellfish, grasses, insects, worms, frogs, snails, slugs, and other plants that grow near the shore.
Nests
Nests are at ground level, usually in dense undergrowth. The hen usually goes back to the site of her birth where she will quake repeatedly to keep other females at bay.
Eggs
Females lay between 5 to 14 eggs in each clutch. They are a greenish-white color.
Mating
They have different partners each year.
Lifespan
Apparently very few live longer than five years.
Where found
They are found in the Northern hemisphere wetlands .
